How to Apply for Passport Online โ Step by Step
- Visit the Passport Seva Portal โ Open your browser and go to passportindia.gov.in. This is the official website of the Ministry of External Affairs for passport applications.
- Register for a New Account โ Click on New User Registration and create a free account using your email address. Select the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) in your city.
- Log In and Select Application Type โ After registration, log in to your account. Click on Apply for Fresh Passport if you are applying for the first time. Select the number of pages (36 or 60) and choose Normal or Tatkaal scheme.
- Fill the Online Application Form โ Fill in all your personal details carefully โ full name, date of birth, place of birth, father's name, mother's name, spouse name (if applicable), address, and emergency contact details. Make sure everything matches your official documents exactly.
- Upload Documents โ Upload clear scanned copies of your identity proof, address proof, date of birth proof, and passport size photograph. All files must be in JPG or PDF format within the allowed size limit.
- Pay the Application Fee โ Pay the applicable fee online using debit card, credit card, net banking, or UPI. For a fresh 36-page passport, the fee is โน1,500. For Tatkaal, it is โน3,500.
- Book an Appointment โ After payment, book an appointment at your nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK). Choose a date and time slot that is convenient for you.
- Visit the PSK on Appointment Date โ Visit the Passport Seva Kendra on your scheduled date and time. Carry your original documents and printed appointment confirmation. Your documents will be verified at the PSK counter.
- Police Verification โ After your PSK visit, a police officer may visit your home for address verification. This is a standard background check step. Normal passport applications go through this step. Tatkaal applications may have post-police verification.
- Receive Your Passport โ After successful police verification and processing, your passport will be dispatched by Speed Post to your registered address. Normal passport delivery takes 30 to 45 days. Tatkaal takes 7 to 14 days.

My address has changed since my last passport. What should I do? +
If your address has changed, you need to apply for a passport reissue (renewal) with updated address details. Submit the new address proof documents during the application. Your old passport should be carried to the PSK appointment along with the new address proof.
